Plumbers, carpenters, gardeners and electricians all have one thing in common – they’ve all been flirted with by overfamiliar clients. So, what is it about these professions that make them so… hot?

Clichés are often born from truth. The lonely housewife and the helpful plumber is not just a fantasy perpetrated by romance novels and porn. From our research, there’s some truth to the phenomenon.

In an old study from the dating site Match.com, the preferred profession for women would choosing a partner was “repairman”, surpassing both doctors and firemen on the desirability scale.

He or she is called in to perform a skill that both you or your partner lack.

For some repairmen, this flirty atmosphere is fun and confidence-boosting, while others are utterly uncomfortable by the unwanted attention in a context that should be nothing but professional.

Whichever is true for you, here are some reasons why repairmen and craftsmen are so sought after:

Did you know that repairmen surpassed both doctors and firemen on the desirability scale?

1. They fix things

When a repairman enters your house, he or she is called in to perform a skill that both you or your partner lack. This is incredibly hot – helplessness, not so much. Everyone wants to be friends with the repairman, so no wonder a little tension arises sometimes. Maybe there are personal problems and emotional scars that could also be fixed?

Repairmen were deep into the tattoo game when single bartenders and baristas got their sleeves.

2. The whole situation is intimate

A repairman is practically the only person allowed to enter your home at any given hour of the day. There’s a certain sense of intimacy just in having a stranger in your kitchen or bathroom, and for some people this unusual situation stirs up all sorts of potential.

3. They can be incredibly fit

Obviously, not all repairmen look like Ryan Gosling fixing up houses in The Notebook. But young repairmen who perform their job with great energy and vigour may sculpt their bodies in a way that would make Greek gods cry with envy. For some, however, too many cups of sugary tea and bacon butties eventually catch up.

Nope, not all repairmen look like Ryan Gosling in The Notebook.

4. What you see is what you get

Dating a doctor may be fun in your imagination, but how often would you actually meet? We’re not gonna fall into the cliché that repairmen are simple beings, but the fact is that many of them can leave work at 5pm and forget all about it until the next morning. The repairman’s focus is to get things done and go home. Unless, of course, they’re self-employed and staying up all night with paperwork, in which case a smart point-of-sale solution would help, right?

5. Their tattoos are funnier

Let’s be honest here. Before every single bartender, barista and baker had expensive sleeves done, repairmen were already deep into the tattoo game. That does not mean that they have cooler tattoos, they’re just, you know… different.
